Canada should cooperate with Russia to solve common problems in the Arctic.
This was stated by parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of foreign Affairs of Canada PES goldsmith-Jones.
“We must insist on the need for relations between Canada and Russia in the Arctic. Together we control three quarters of the North, and prevent scientists from both countries to communicate with each other is irrational. Our government is trying to be rational,” said goldsmith-Jones.
In her opinion, to achieve extremely necessary to sever the consensus of all States bordering the Arctic will be impossible without Russia’s involvement. “Consensus is impossible without the joint work of Canada and Russia, no matter how hard the work was. Our government will build strong relationships with all Arctic States,” said the parliamentary Secretary.
She added that “cooperation with Russia in many aspects of the problem of the North in our interests.”
As reported, the head of the canadian Ministry of foreign Affairs stéphane Dion have repeatedly stated about “restoring contacts with Russia, simultaneously insisting on the continued strong support of Ukraine. Russia, along with Canada and another six countries (Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway, USA and Iceland) are members of the Arctic Council, an intergovernmental high-level forum, which brings together countries bordering the Arctic.
The previous government of Canada led by Stephen Harper after the invasion of Russia to Ukraine has broken off all contacts with Russia, including in the framework of the Arctic Council.
