In the crash of a ferry on the river Chindwin in Central Myanmar killed 32 people, dozens missing.
Local officials reported that they had saved 154 people, however, fear that the death toll could reach hundreds of people.
The accident occurred early in the morning yesterday, October 16, in the region of Sagaing.
According to the preliminary version, the cause of the accident was the overcrowding of the boat, where there were 250-300 people, while the permissible capacity of the vessel is 150-170 people. The ferry ran into an underwater obstruction, turned over and sank.
The ferry was heading from the city Homalin to Monywa. On Board were mainly students, school teachers and doctors, who were traveling to celebrate the end of Buddhist lent in one of the temples of the region, Sagaing.
According to local media, one of the passengers drew the attention of the captain and the local authorities on the overcrowding of the vessel, but the reaction to this statement was not followed.
