It’s not just a location for show.
Fort Boyard (Fort Boyard) is located on the West coast of France, bordering the Atlantic ocean. This building was erected by order of Emperor Napoleon, and world famous, this stone Fort was as a place of filming of the eponymous TV show.
The idea to erect a Fort at this place, in the middle of the Strait Antioch originated from the French during the build-up of armed forces under Louis XIV in the XVII century. Artillery fire he had to guard the approaches to the port of Rochefort from enemy ships.
However, when inspecting the construction site, the chief Royal engineer de Vauban realised the complexity of the task. He said the Sun King: “Sire, easier teeth grasp the moon than to build a fortress in this place.”
The construction of the Fort started in 1801 on the orders of Napoleon Bonaparte and, with long interruptions, was completed in 1857.
Construction was oval in shape, the 68 meters long and 31 meters wide. The walls reach 20 meters in height. In the center of the Fort is an outdoor patio. On the ground floor there are warehouses and barracks for the soldiers and officers. The floor above contained casemates for guns and warehouses. Above that is room for berbenich guns and mortars.
The garrison of the Fort Boyard consisted of 250 people. By the time of completion of its construction in the world, has been widely used rifles. Guns with rifled barrels shoot farther and more accurately than the old smoothbore. Strait Antioch, can now be controlled by long-range artillery from the shore. Fort Boyard was not needed.
After 1871, Fort Boyard was briefly military prison, and before it is completely abandoned in the early twentieth century. The time went by, the Fort slowly crumbled and was covered half-meter layer of bird guano. In 1950 – 1980-ies resell it from hand to hand.
