Australian Coober Pedy, which is home to about 1.5 thousand people, this year will celebrate its centenary. And really have something to celebrate, because life in this town is not easy: the average summer temperature is 30 degrees Celsius and often reaches 40 degrees. Therefore, the majority of inhabitants live there under the ground in specially dug caves, where it is much cooler. Why despite these difficult conditions, people continue to live here? And all because in Coober Pedy mined the most valuable and most expensive opals in the world.
Kandovan, Iran. The residents of this village live in houses carved in the rocks. Some of them more than 700 years – the first people settled here to escape from the Mongol invaders.

Matera, Italy. Even 50 years ago, Matera was one of the poorest cities in Europe with a population of 20 thousand inhabitants living in the rock-cut close houses in the Sassi historical part of the city. In the 60-ies of all residents were evicted. And only recently came back to live two thousand people.
