Why the West do not recognize Crimea as part of Russia?

It’s been over two years since then, as in the Crimea, a referendum was held, the results of which the Peninsula returned to Russia. This form of direct expression of popular will is the most important institution of democracy. But Western countries, considers itself the main fighter for democracy in the world, do not recognize the results of the vote.
