She could be a pirate.
Versions of the cocktail “Bloody Mary” and why it was so named, there are about a dozen, and prescription to choose one of them as the only true is hardly possible. But one of the most interesting is the version that the cocktail was named after the ruthless and desperate female pirate Mary read. Her life was full of adventures and formed the basis of an action film.
Mary read was born in England circa 1685, Her mother married a sailor who left her, leaving her pregnant. He died in a shipwreck, a woman in a few months gave birth to a boy, but he died before year. Frivolous beauty soon got pregnant again and gave birth to a girl. From infancy her dressed as a boy to convince the wealthy mother-in-law that this is her grandson, and to obtain from it financial assistance.
In 15 years, Mary went to Flanders, where, under the name mark in the men’s clothing was enrolled in the infantry regiment as a cadet. She later moved to serve in the cavalry and for several years he participated in the battles, showing desperate courage and ferocity. Mary decided to reveal her secret when she fell in love with a comrade-in-arms. They got married and retired. Cruelty in battle was different for two women who were among the pirates, Mary reed and Anne Bonny, the wife of captain John Rekhema. For his ferocity in battle, they earned the nickname “fierce hell cats”.
In the fall of 1720, the pirate ship “Dragon” was attacked by British Royal frigate. The pirates grabbed and on arrival at Jamaica was brought to trial. They were all sentenced to be hanged but the two women were spared, as they were both pregnant. But Mary read died, presumably from the fever. There is also a version that she was secretly murdered. Because more than anything, Mary loved the bloody fight and a stiff drink, it is believed that the cocktail “Bloody Mary” was named in her honor.
However, put forward other versions. In British history there was another “Bloody Mary” – the so-called ruthless Mary I Tudor, which dealt with the objectionable with cruelty. During her reign, about 300 Protestants burned at the stake. However, if it’s actually her name alcoholic cocktail, hard to say.
