Unemployment in the Donbas has reached 50%

Безработица на Донбассе достигла 50%

The unemployment rate in the occupied Donbas has reached more than 50% in 2014. This was announced by the Deputy administrator and Director, regional Bureau of UN development program in Europe and the CIS assistant Secretary General of the UN resident coordinator in an interview with the Commander.

“The conflict has caused serious damage to the economy of Donetsk and Lugansk regions. Was destroyed businesses, damaged infrastructure, and communications. The result was a decline in industrial production. In 2014, the unemployment rate in both areas has reached more than 50 percent,” she said.

According to her, investment fell to its lowest level for the whole period of independence since 1991.

“No wonder young people leave the Donbass and looking for work elsewhere. For us it is very important that small and medium business have played an important role in the recovery process, because usually it is through the development of this sector, there are new jobs, the regional economy flourishes, creates livelihoods for the population,” said Sultanoglu.
