Turkey Deputy PM sees “big risk” depending on Russian gas

The big risk for Turkey is dependent on Russian natural gas, said Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Simsek. The official, who oversees the government’s economic bloc, said at an energy conference in Indonesia.

“The share of Russia accounts for 58% of the volume of gas imports. Undoubtedly, the dependence on Russian gas is a big risk for Turkey. We want to reduce dependence on suppliers and to this end, we build the TRANS-Anatolian gas pipeline.

Imported from abroad gas covers 97% of Turkey’s needs, he said. The TRANS-Anatolian (TANAP) gas pipeline designed to transport natural gas from the Azerbaijani Shah Deniz field to the borders of Greece and Bulgaria via Georgia and Turkey.

At the initial stage, its capacity should reach 16 billion cubic meters per year (10 billion is intended to Europeans, 6 billion – Turkey).
