The riots began on the evening of 8 July, near the presidential Palace. In the Palace the country’s President, Salva Kiir and former rebel leader Machar Riec Tanna, who now holds the position of Vice President, had to give a joint press conference. Soon the fighting spread to other quarters of the city. Heard machine gun fire was heard artillery fire. According to AFP, the fighting lasted about half an hour.
