The U.S. state Department assured that they will never recognize the annexation of Crimea by Russia.
The United States will never recognize Russia’s annexation of Crimea. This was stated by coordinator of the US state Department on the issue of sanctions Daniel fried, in an interview with the Latvian online newspaper “Delfi”.
“The United States is capable of extremely long patience. In the case of Crimea, I can confirm that U.S. will never recognize the annexation. In the Budapest Memorandum, Russia recognized Crimea as part of Ukraine”, – he said during a visit to Riga.
According to Frida, Washington believes sanctions are an effective tool of influence on Russia. “I think the sanctions (against Russia) must be maintained. Besides, we need to strengthen our diplomatic aspirations to support the implementation of the Minsk agreements”, – he added.
The U.S. state Department spokesman said that “sanctions are not punishment, their goal is to support concrete actions, in this case – developments in the Ukraine such an agreement, which would restore the sovereignty of the country”.
