The administration of incumbent democratic President Barack Obama tried several times to tighten the country the rules of sale of weapons, but each time the Congress, which is controlled by Republicans, refused to adopt such laws, citing the constitutional right of US citizens to bear arms. The associated Press reminds that the latest measures to strengthen control over weapons buyers were adopted in 2007.
