The President of Russia counter-sanctions extended until the end of 2017

In response to the extension of anti-Russian sanctions by the European Union the President of Russia made the decision on the extension of the so-called counter-sanctions against EU and other countries. To extend from 6 August 2016 to 31 December 2017 the action of certain special economic measures stipulated by the decree of the President of the Russian Federation “On application of certain special economic measures to ensure security of the Russian Federation.

The West has managed to comment on the Kremlin’s decision, calling it “disproportionate”. The main emphasis is on the fact that sanctions against Russia has been extended “only six months”, and Vladimir Putin extended the counter “for almost a year.”

Recall that retaliatory economic measures Russia originally introduced in August 2014 in relation to the EU, USA, Norway, Canada and Australia. After some time, the food embargo was extended to the other States that supported anti-Russian sanctions: Albania, Liechtenstein, Iceland and Montenegro. Last on the list was Ukraine.
