The offshore scandal has hit Iceland…

Скандал с офшорами ударил по… Исландии

In the offshore scandal provoked by the publication by the International consortium of journalistic investigations “the Panama document” owned by the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca, had been involved many politicians, including 72 former and current heads of state and government. But most of all a disclosure hit, ironically, by the Prime Minister of Iceland Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson.

According to the Guardian newspaper, the night before on the square in front of the Parliament building in downtown Reykjavik had no less than 10 thousand people, and this despite the fact that the country is home to only 330 thousand people. Some pounded drums, others blew whistles, others chanted demands for the resignation of the Prime Minister. Some even waved bananas as a symbol of the fact that they now live in a banana Republic (so often referred to as Panama, where, as it turned out, many politicians hide their income).

Many Icelanders began to wonder, how can the Prime Minister at the same time to hide their money in offshore and try to bring the country’s financial crisis in which Iceland was in 2008.

According to “the Panama document”, Gunnlaugsson with his wife before took in 2009, the Prime Minister, was owned by an offshore company Wintris, but did not disclose this to the Parliament. The company’s assets are estimated at 500 million kronor (at the moment it is fully owned by the wife of Gunnlaugsson). And this despite the fact that in Iceland there are strict measures of currency regulation and restrictions on the import and export of capital.

Gunnlaugsson believes that it has not violated any law, all his money was declared, and therefore is not going to resign.

In addition to Gunnlaugsson in “the Panama document” “lit up” the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, European Commissioner for climate change and energy Miguel arias Cañete, the former President of Egypt Hosni Mubarak, former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, attacking the Spanish football club “Barcelona” Lionel Messi, the head of the Union of European football associations Michel Platini, the Spanish Director Pedro almodóvar, and many others.
