An abandoned hotel in the mountains of Bali is shrouded in stories of ghosts, curses and corruption.
Near the road of Hard-partying Kuta to the beautiful beratan lake, on a spur of the mountain slope lies a massive luxury resort.
Once it was a spectacular sight, but today the hotel is empty and at night it’s dark. Built in 1990-ies, the hotel was abandoned on the eve of its opening, and virtually untouched by modernity.
Haunted Palace (the haunted Palace) —better known as PI Bedugul Taman Rekreasi Hotel and resort, today overgrown with creeping plants, weeds, and overgrown with legends. One of the stories associated with the hotel, says that the developer of the project was cursed because of his corrupt activities and subsequently went bankrupt. Another story claims that a fully functioning hotel was filled with staff and guests, who all suddenly disappeared overnight, leaving ghosts and demons wander through empty hotel corridors.
Oddly enough, in the story of the Ghostly Palace is quite difficult to check but the most likely scenario is that it was built in the early 1990s, as an investment project of Tommy Suharto – the youngest son of former Indonesian President Suharto. Tommy went to prison in 2002 on charges of murder-for-hire judges of the Supreme Court of Indonesia, which previously found him guilty on charges of corruption. Subsequently, the construction of the hotel stopped and never resumed.
Now abandoned for over ten years, the building, still equipped with furniture and fixtures as if the hotel is preparing to welcome its first guests.
