An old mansion described in the novel by Charlotte Bronte “Jane Eyre, opened to the public after 10 years of restoration.

The writer visited Norton Conyers, situated in the County of North Yorkshire, in 1839, and learned the legend of the crazy woman locked in the attic. Later this became the basis for the image of Mrs. Rochester who was also kept imprisoned husband in the novel writer.

Fans of the novel “Jane Eyre” can now pass through a secret door, constructed in the XIX-th century, and see a ladder leading to the attic, known as “the Room of a crazy woman”. However, the stairs themselves not strong enough in order for it to rise.

The owner of the mansion says that they call these stairs “the Stairs Jane Eyre as Charlotte Bronte described in exactly the same type of staircase as existing at Thornfield Hall, where the governess was a main character of the novel.

After restoration work that took 10 years, the estate will be open to the public on selected days in may, July and August.
