The famous Treasury of the Habsburg dynasty, Vienna Museum of art history this year celebrates 125 years since the opening, and presents a magnificent gift: digitized and laid out in open access more than 10 thousand images of the exhibits. The Museum of art history is considered one of the largest in the world and is in importance and wealth of collections on a par with the Hermitage and the Louvre. In the main building of the Museum — 91 hall, where the meeting of Eastern and Egyptian antiquities, a collection of ancient monuments, works of Western European sculpture. Precious paintings and artifacts collected by the Habsburgs from the XV century. However, the time has come when thoughtful and exquisitely composed collection of the Austrian Imperial court ceased to fit not only in the Hofburg Palace, the city residence of the Emperor, but in the other buildings belonging to the Austrian crown. In the 1860s the issue of new museums has been discussed, and the Emperor Franz Joseph I, accustomed to the best, invites the famous architect Gottfried Semper to design a new complex for the new Ringstrasse. It is planned not only to expand the territory of the city through the Imperial forum — the name Semper gave his architectural project — but also to build a separate Museum building for the Imperial collections.

A huge complex, conceived by the author of the buildings of the Dresden Opera and the Dresden art gallery, was embodied only in part, but Emperor Franz Joseph I still got the coveted museums, which was taken the rich collections of the Austrian court. The Museum of art history — one of the gems of the Museum quarter, the Austrian capital. Rather, it is two pearls: on the square of Maria Theresa located two luxurious and almost like the appearance of the building, built in the spirit of the Renaissance. The second building is the Museum of natural history, which houses a huge collection of natural artifacts collected by the Habsburg family. If you go through the area, we will go to the Treasury of works of art, which laid the basis of the Austrian Archduke Leopold Wilhelm (1614-1662). Being the Governor of Flanders, the Archduke regularly visited the famous Brussels art market. In the short term Leopold Wilhelm have created a significant art collection, selected with great taste and understanding. Leaving Flanders, the Archduke was taken to Vienna their treasures — paintings by Dutch, Italian, Flemish, and German masters. This collection was enriched over the centuries. In 1918, both of the Museum of the history of art and science, like all collections of the Habsburgs, was expropriated and became state property.

Now the Museum consists of several expositions. So, the military collection of the emperors are exhibited in the halls of Neuburg (in a wing of the Hofburg). There’s also a Museum of ancient musical instruments, Ephesus Museum and other displays. Separate Assembly — in Stalburg, the schönbrunn castle and the castle of Ambras near Innsbruck.
