The European Union threatened to impose sanctions against Poland

Евросоюз грозит ввести санкции против ПольшиThis is the first time in the history of the EU when the EU is accusing the state included in its composition, in undermining democracy.

The European Union threatened to impose sanctions against Poland because of the threat to the rule of law in the country.

As reported, the European Commission is accusing the government of Poland that the controversial reform of the national constitutional court is undemocratic and represents a “systematic threat” to the rule of law in the country.

Wednesday, may 1, the European Commission has issued a formal warning to the Polish authorities. However, those, in turn, do not intend to give.

“Opinion is opinion, it has no influence on decisions which will be adopted in Poland. This is a problem of Poland, and we must solve it”, – said the Prime Minister Beata Szydlo.

According to the publication, if the warning is not followed the changes that the Commission may impose against Poland sanctions in the form of a fine or deprivation of the right to vote on new EU laws.

As noted, this is the first time in the history of the block, when the EU is accusing the state included in its composition, in undermining democracy. The conflict has not only soured relations between Warsaw and Brussels, but also questioned the right of the EU to demand legislative changes in sovereign member States.

At the end of December, the Polish Parliament, the majority of which belongs to the party “Law and justice”, adopted a law restricting the powers of the COP. The European Commission stated that these actions undermine the rule of law.
