Today in the Arctic borders of Europe, Asia and America is 16 States. Finland is not yet included in any blocks. Britain, Denmark, Iceland, USA, Canada, Norway, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Netherlands — NATO members. Greenland, Denmark and the US have mutual agreements on the so-called mutual defense. In addition, Ireland, UK, Denmark, Sweden, Finland are members of the EU.

And Russia is in the Eurasian economic community, CSTO and SCO, other members of which have outlets into the Arctic basin. The Arctic Council consists of eight Arctic States — Canada, USA, Iceland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Russia. The Council of Barents-Euroarctic region (SBER) included in the rights of the permanent members: Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Russian Federation, Finland and Sweden, Commission of the European communities.

Nine States — great Britain, Germany, Italy, Canada, Netherlands, Poland, France, USA, Japan — have observer status. Member countries of the Council of Ministers of the Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, the Autonomous territories: Faroe Islands (Denmark), Greenland (Denmark), åland Islands (Finland). This implies that a huge “Arctic pie” have the appetite of not only those countries that have a coast on the Arctic ocean, but also other members of the international community.
