This is one of the most outstanding attractions of Greece.
The ancient city of Paphos in Cyprus was the island’s capital during Greco-Roman period (3rd century BC — 3rd century ad). In those days the city was the most beautiful villas in the Eastern Mediterranean, belonging to the Roman governors and wealthy nobles.
The floors of these villas were decorated with beautiful mosaic pictures, with scenes from Greek mythology, faces of Greek gods, goddesses and heroes, as well as simple scenes of everyday life. Mosaics are made from small cubes of marble and stone with inset colored glass. Many of these villas and mosaic floors have been discovered only in the past fifty years, during archaeological excavations. Today, many of them are still in the initial stage of excavation.
The most outstanding mosaics can be found in the houses of Dionysus, Orpheus, Aion and Theseus. The building is named after the subject of mosaics found there. The largest is the house of Dionysus with the most impressive mosaics, for the most part devoted to the Greek God of wine Dionysus. The house was established by the end of the 2nd century, but destroyed after the disastrous earthquakes of the 4th century. The most famous mosaic depicts Dionysos, drinking wine in the carriage. Other mosaics depict mythological vintage scene, covering about 550 square meters of floor. This is one of the most outstanding attractions of Greece.
