Thailand voted for a new Constitution

Таиланд проголосовал за новую КонституциюThe country held a referendum

The majority of voters in Thailand in the referendum, according to preliminary data, approved the draft of the new Constitution that reinforces the military’s influence in the political process, reports the BBC.

Haven’t counted all the ballots, however, according to local media reports, at least 62% of the participants voted in support of the project, which was developed by the military government. The military are in power in Thailand after the coup that occurred two years ago.

It is also reported that electors voted in favor of proposals to grant expanded powers to the Senate, whose members are not elected but appointed.

As assures the government of Thailand, the new Constitution will strengthen the stability and accountability of power.

However, critics claim that the new Constitution will only increase the influence of the armed forces, including through the appointment of members of the Senate, in which part of seats will be reserved for high-ranking military.

Previously, more than 100 people trying to argue against a referendum in social networks, was arrested, and for open criticism of the government imposed penalties of up to 10 years in prison.

We will remind, in may 2014, Thailand’s military coup. In connection with the riots, which lasted in the country for several months, the army imposed martial law throughout the country.
