Swiss citizens refused to join the European Union in 1992.
Switzerland officially withdrew the application for accession to the EU, the Bern filed in 1992. This was announced by the head of the Federal Department of foreign Affairs Didier Burkhalter.
“We have a fundamental bilateral agreements with our closest partner, the European Union, but we don’t want to join it,” said Burkhalter at a meeting on the occasion of the 725th anniversary of the founding of the Swiss Confederation.
The Federal Council of Switzerland stated in writing a few days ago to Brussels, at the request of Parliament that the application for EU membership was no longer valid due to a vote on the question of the European economic area.
Thus, according to Burkhalter , Bern will continue to develop bilateral agreements with Brussels.
