Socotra – the island of unusual trees

Сокотра - остров необыкновенных деревьевThis island is in the Indian ocean.

Socotra is an archipelago of four Islands and two rocks in the Indian ocean off the coast of Somalia, about 350 km South of the Arabian Peninsula. Due to the isolation of the island many local species of flora and fauna no longer occur in any of the corners of the world.

The modest size of the island is 134 km long and 43 km wide – not prevent it to be among the most important world centres of biological diversity.

In Sanskrit “Sokotra” means “Island of happiness”. And it is easy to agree – the violence of the Botanical charm coexists here with silence and huge white beaches.

For many centuries, Socotra island was inaccessible to researchers. But in the late 90s he has been bombarded with attention, especially from interested in its economic development and preservation of the local unique natural environment.

Due to its nature, which has been preserved since prehistoric times, the island attracts not only experts and scholars, but lovers of ecotourism and relaxing stay.
