Russian hackers accused of manipulating exchange rates

The jump rate of the ruble against the dollar by more than 15 percent at the end of February 2015 was caused by Russian hackers invading system in Kazan “Energobank”. About it reports Bloomberg with reference to the report of the Russian company Group-IB, responsible for investigating cybercrime.

Infecting systems, “Energobank”, according to the company, was carried out by means of a Trojan virus Corkow. The hackers posted more than 500 million dollars at non-market rates that led to fluctuations of the ruble against the dollar between 55 and 66 rubles.

In “Energobank” stated that illegal transactions were committed by a group of persons who attacked the financial system of the organization. According to “Vedomosti”, as a result of these actions, the Bank lost 224 million rubles. On the Moscow exchange explained that their infrastructure in this case was not affected.

Did you hackers any financial benefit from the operation, is unknown. Experts investigating the attack on the Bank’s system, suggesting that this step could be training to future attacks.

According to the head of Department of investigation of Group-IB Dmitry Volkov, this was the first documented attack of a virus Corkow, which is able to bring significantly large losses.

Such malicious code can find a loophole in the company’s quality system and make infected computers to follow the instructions of the attackers, as they say in Group-IB. Moreover, Corkow code is constantly changing so that it could not recognize the antivirus program. According to experts, the virus has already infected more than 250 million computers in the world.
