Putin has outdone himself

Ukraine will not sell. And we won’t back down, says Vitaly Portnikov for newsru.ua.

The harsh statement made by the Secretary of state of the United States John Kerry in Brussels on the readiness of West and USA in particular to support Ukraine in its conflict with Russia and that the dialogue with Moscow should be based on respect for the principles of international law is not just another signal. This change in the tone of relations between Moscow and Washington. And it’s not just the current administration, but also those who will replace it.

In Washington and previously was not going to trade Ukraine – to on this subject did not think of Russian politics or those of our compatriots who are accustomed to measure the entire world by the yardstick of their own immorality. But I tried not to focus on the differences, hoping that a respectful tone and seek compromises will help to find mutual understanding and

But it is now clear that the Russian President is not going any understanding to look. That, like any blackmailer, he sees the search for understanding only as a sign of weakness. The United State doesn’t need to prove to Putin that they are strong. They just need to get rid of excessive intelligence in the dialogue with “muggers”. This is what is happening now.

But even if we think in terms that are so like the inhabitants of the Kremlin – in terms of trade death, then we must admit that at the moment have nothing else to sell. In Aleppo, Putin outdid himself. In the Donbas for new evidence of “influence” to start a major war. Real. And he is clearly not ready.

Therefore, the Russian President and all Russians who support their ruler – it is necessary to understand one simple thing. You cannot become a world power for fun, organizing the RAID, mocking people, arranging local levers of instability. World power is economic power, innovation and prestige in the world, mobile population, loyal allies. None of this from Russia.

And we have seized territory there. But nobody is going to forget about it and forgive the aggressor his stealth attacks. All will have to pay – and the Donbass, and the Crimea. All have to pay the price. Of course, it is very important that the West is not going to back off that Americans change the tone.

But we will not retreat.
