Extremes of space weather – those that can significantly degrade the critical infrastructure – the ability to cripple a large part of the power supply network, leading to cascading failures that affect basic services such as water, health and transport. Like many other Executive orders, Obama’s Directive instructs Executive authorities in their responsibility in the preparation and response to space weather events. Office of scientific and technical policy of the White house will coordinate the efforts of agencies across government, including defense, trade, energy and NASA, which will work together to improve their ability to predict phenomena of space weather and to ensure the protection of critical infrastructure from those consequences.
Obama also ordered to publish Federal data on previous important events of space weather.
Obama’s Executive order also unveiled the pre-existing unknown secret Directive, signed on 15 July, called presidential policy Directive No. 40. It establishes new national policy of continuity that has determined the “key national functions” of the Federal government. Such Directive, known as PPD, are commonly classified by Executive decree in the sphere of national security.
