Below we have compiled a list of 10 most famous and mysterious places, which are prohibited for tourists. Some of the following places is prohibited for all, and the rest are only open to government officials, royalty, military or others with pompous titles.

1. ISLAND OF SURTSEY
The reason for the ban: science experiments

In 1963, in Iceland the eruption of the local volcano, which was formed a new island with an area of 2.7 square kilometers. This immediately aroused the interest of scientists from different countries, as it became an outstanding example of the new education and the emergence of new life. Since then, the island Surtsey (named after the mythological character Surt) can be visited only for scientific purposes, and for all tourists this is a restricted area.

2. THE ISLAND OF QUEIMADA GRANDE
The reason for the ban: too many poisonous snakes

The island of Queimada Grande, located 35 km from the coast of Brazil, is like a real Paradise. However, a trip to this island will cost you a life, as it is teeming with poisonous snakes: in the area of 0.43 square kilometers to be here in about 4000 snakes. Here dwells some of the most dangerous snakes in the world — an island bothrops (Bothrops insularis), from the bite of which there is a rapid necrosis, that is death is almost instantaneous. Its venom is five times stronger than that of other vipers. For this reason, the Brazilian authorities imposed a ban on visiting the island of Queimada Grande, which is also called the island of snakes.

3. NORTH SENTINELESE ISLAND
The reason for the ban: unfriendly natives

North Sentinel island is one of the Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal. Though officially the island is controlled by India, it is home to the dangerous natives, the sentinelese, who avoid any contact with civilization and fiercely resist any invasion. According to scientists, these aborigines spent 60 000 years in isolation from the rest of human civilization. These people actively defend their territory. For example, in 2004 after the Indian ocean Tsunami was, the Indian government sent a helicopter to find out if you need the help of local residents, but flying the helicopter was met by the arrows of the locals who clearly wanted to run him off. Their latest victims were lost fishermen. After their murder, Indian authorities have urged citizens to stay away from the sentinelese and their land.

4. THE TEMPLE OF ISE, JAPAN

The most important Shrine of Japan is the Shrine of ISE Jingu. The main temple is surrounded by a high wooden fence. Only high-ranking priests and members of the Imperial family are allowed inside. Until 1945, in the temple of ISE was even more harder to hit: he was separated from the outside world by the river Miyagawa, symbolizing the boundary between ordinary and sacred land. The monks were strictly forbidden to cross this river, for it was considered that this would violate the sanctity of the sanctuary and will cause problems for all of Japan.

5. ISLAND GRUINARD
The reason for the ban: testing of biological weapons

In 1942, the British government bought this Scottish island Gruinard for testing biological weapons, in particular for the testing of anthrax. During the experiment it was determined that anthrax had contaminated the area, causing deaths in 95% of cases. Until the 1980s, the island was one of the most dangerous places on the planet. Only in 1986, scientists finally began “cleansing” the evil of the island and it was declared safe to visit in 1990. However, no one there never settled. Experts have warned that anthrax spores still in the soil of the island, and this means that it will not be habitable for another hundred years.

6. THE CAVES OF LASCAUX, SOUTHWESTERN FRANCE

For history buffs this place is just an absolute dream, as here you can see the lifestyle of people living thousands of years ago. However, unfortunately, the Lascaux caves are in the list of prohibited places. In this cave are the most beautiful primitive art works, the origin of which belong to XVIII—XV century BC Used this cave was opened for tourists, but a few years later it was closed, as it found that carbon dioxide exhaled by people, destroyed some images. Today, few scientists open access to this cave.

7. AREA 51, GROOM LAKE, UNITED STATES

This list would not be complete without mentioning the notorious Area 51, located to the Northwest of Les Vegas. This military base since 1950, serves the mysterious purposes of the U.S. government, and to this day no one knows exactly what it is used for. However, there are various rumors. 9. MILITARY BASE PINE GAP, AUSTRALIA
The reason for the ban: secret military base

Pine Gap is about 18 km South-West of the town of Alice springs, which is located in the heart of Australia. Gap is controlled by the USA and Australia, and is a very important facility for the country’s economy. The air space around it and above it (up to 5500 meters) is limited.

10. MEZHGORE, RUSSIA
This town in the Bashkortostan Republic has the status of closed administrative-territorial formations. It is about 200 kilometers from the city of Ufa — capital of the Republic. The city is located near the highest mountain of the Urals – Yamantau, which is constantly patrolled. Rumor has it that there are building an underground city — the spare capital of the Russian Federation.
