Merkel is ready to meet with Putin only under certain conditions

Меркель готова встретиться с Путиным лишь при определенных условиях

The official representative of the government of Germany indicated that the meeting in Berlin in “channel format” can only occur if the preconditions will be created for the settlement of the Ukrainian crisis.

Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel (Angela Merkel) is ready to invite the Russian President Vladimir Putin to Berlin to participate in the summit in “channel format” on the situation in the East of Ukraine, but only if there is a chance to resolve the Ukrainian crisis. This was stated by the official representative of the government of Germany Steffen Seibert (Steffen Seibert) on Friday, October 14, in Berlin, stressing the importance of continuing negotiations on the implementation of the Minsk agreements.

“In due time, if will set the stage for significant progress, in Berlin may take place on a direct and personal meeting on the highest level,” said Seibert. According to him, regardless of the assessment of what is happening in Aleppo, with Russia it is necessary to maintain contact and to engage it in negotiations. The goal of intensive discussions on the situation in Ukraine is the stabilization of the situation in the East of the country, said the official representative of the German government.

Steffen Seibert, an official representative of the German foreign Ministry confirmed that foreign-policy adviser to the German Chancellor and the political Director of the Ministry of foreign Affairs of Germany are currently in talks in Minsk. Only when a successful agreement at the level of advisors to the German government was willing to undertake the Berlin summit in “channel format”, said Seibert.

Earlier the Russian government said that the meeting “channel four” (Germany, France, Russia, Ukraine) can pass on 19 October in Berlin, but German authorities have not confirmed this information. If the summit does take place, it will be the first visit to Germany Vladimir Putin since Russia’s annexation of the Ukrainian Peninsula of Crimea and the beginning of the Ukrainian crisis in 2014.
