Medvedev: arms supplies to Yerevan and Baku inevitable

Медведев: поставки оружия Еревану и Баку неизбежны

If Russia will stop deliveries, it will be replaced by other countries, said the Prime Minister.

If Russia stops to supply Armenia and Azerbaijan with weapons, it will be replaced by other countries, said Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

“If we just think for a moment that Russia has refused this role, we understand: this place will not be empty. Will buy weapons in other countries, the degree of lethality will not decrease,” – said Medvedev in an interview to the program “Vesti on Saturday” with Sergei Brilev on the channel “Russia 1” (VGTRK).

According to Medvedev, there is no certainty that “the arrival on the market of suppliers of arms from other countries will ease the situation.” He expressed the opinion that the situation “is likely to be more complex”.

“I believe that the weapons can and should be purchased not only for its use, and for it to be a deterrent, and this time you need to evaluate all sides of the conflict,” Medvedev said.

The day before on the continuation of supply to both countries in accordance with the contracts as strategic partners, said Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin.

Azerbaijan is a major importer of Russian weapons.

For the period from 2010 to 2014, Moscow and Baku signed several contracts for the supply of helicopters, anti-aircraft missile systems, armored vehicles and artillery weapons with a total cost of about $ 4 billion.

Armenia in 2013 purchased Russian arms on $ 16 million, were first delivered heavy weapons. In 2014, the supply was not.

Statements by Prime Minister Medvedev sounded amid mutual accusations of the parties of violating the ceasefire in Karabakh.

Then the hostilities on the contact line between Azerbaijani and Karabakh forces have been discontinued, but shortly thereafter the parties began to accuse each other of violating the ceasefire.

We will remind, the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh broke out with renewed vigor on the night of 2 April. Sides about hundreds of dead opponents.
