In the Central part of Tokyo is one of the world’s largest markets fish and seafood, better known as Tsukiji fish market.
The first market in Tokyo, then called Edo, appeared in the 17th century. Near the Nihonbashi bridge fishermen from Osaka to sell surplus fish that were imported to supply the fortress at the invitation of the shogun Minamoto Tokugawa Ieyasu.
The Central wholesale market was built in 1923 after the “rice riots”, when the inhabitants of entire cities spoke out against food shortages, and speculators-wholesalers. In big cities the decision of the Parliament began to build special institutions for trade products. The Tokyo market was built in March 1923, and in September of that year he collapsed after the earthquake, together with the Central part of the city. Again, the market was built in the Tsukiji district.
As a rule, even the largest fish markets do not attain the status of local attractions and simply act as outlets for purchasing seafood. However, the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo, located in the heart of the capital, was the exception, rightly earning huge popularity not only among thousands of buyers, but also among city guests.
Every day in the largest fish market sells more than two thousand tons of fresh fish and seafood, which includes more than 400 different types of sea animals ranging from beneficial marine algae and sardines and cheap to real seafood, and a huge tuna carcasses. Even the name “Tsukiji” has “sea” sense, because it translates as the land reclaimed from the sea.
