The hippie movement swept the capital in the late 70-ies. Representatives of this current can be easily find in almost every major city in the USSR for so-called “hangouts”. In Moscow, main places of gathering was “Psychodrom No. 2”, “Frunzenskaya garden” (on the street Znamenka), “Pushka” (Pushkinskaya square), or Arbat, Gogol (Gogol Boulevard).
Soviet hippies were culturally affiliated with the dissident environment. Many were unhappy with the Communist regime and its ideology, others simply wanted to live in a non-politicized system.
