The invention of the Franciscan monk Berthold Schwarz has really changed the course of history: in 1330 (in some sources, this date differs slightly) he invented gunpowder. Historians are still arguing about whether Schwartz real figure, or invention attributed to a fictional alchemist.

Information about the discoverer of gunpowder reached our days from the guide to pyrotechnics began 1400 years, which are preserved in later copies. It contained information about what a certain alchemist monk named Berthold conducting the experiments, accidentally got a powder, mixing the three ingredients – sulphur, charcoal and saltpeter. To check out the properties of the resulting powder, he set it on fire, and he left the cell. Soon there was a mighty explosion, and when he returned, he found that the pestle, which he pounding the powder, sticking out of the beams.

It became clear that the invented substance has a destructive force, and the German king Wenceslas IV, found out about it and fearing Berthold, ordered the execution of the inventor, having put on a barrel of gunpowder, which was set on fire.

Inventing instruments of torture is, of course, people with troubled psyche. Often their ideas are sophisticated, and the way the implementation is horrendous. Purely “famous” for the fact that the order of the ruler Phalaris produced copper ox designed for executions.

The condemned was placed in a hollow body of a bull, and under the belly of the animal is bred fire. The victim felt terrible torments, because, in fact, was in the hot tank. Awesome the effect is intensified by the fact that on the face of the ox was made of the nostrils of which were steaming, as if the animal was angry in earnest. And from the womb – could hear the frightening moans that Isaias turned into a roar.

Fate was not merciful to the inventor of this deadly trap: Phalaris ordered to try out the invention at the very Purile, so he felt full of flour, which sentenced thousands of people in the future. However, fate has punished himself tyrant: he was soon deposed and ended his life, suffering the same tortures in the womb of a bull.
