10. Cave “Devil’s throat (Devil’s Throat Cave), Jagodina (Yagodina)

This impressive Bulgarian cave resembles the head of a devil with a waterfall flowing directly into his throat. They say that here Orpheus descended into the underworld of the dead, Hades, to find his beloved Eurydice.

Located in the Western Rhodopes cave “Devil’s throat” is a popular attraction among tourists, cave explorers and photographers, like the underground Paradise. Huge and a bit unfriendly, the cave goes straight to the depths of hell, the waters of the river Trigrad (Trigrad River plunging by 42 m in the “Roaring hall (“The Hall of Thunder”).

In the ‘ Roaring hall, the second largest cave in the country, eventually formed a funnel through which goes the water, flowing nearly 150 meters before connecting with an underground river. This underground river is the most interesting feature of this cave: nothing sediments in the “mouth” of the cave, not coming to the surface outside.

The researchers conducted many experiments — from pieces of wood to the colors — trying to track the movement of water. Despite the rather short distance, the fact that the water seems to be needed more than one and a half hours to travel from one end to the other, support the probability of the existence under the river flows underground, a completely different possible geological attractiveness.

Built by the Builder Dimitar from Nedelino village nearby (Nedelino) at the beginning of the XVI century, between 1515 and 1518 year, the Devil’s bridge is the most beautiful arched bridge, which is crossed by Arda in Bulgaria.

It was built on the site of the demolished Roman bridge and crashed into the steep slopes of the Rhodope mountains along the ancient road connecting the Aegean sea and the Thracian lowland.

The bridge is located near the town of Ardino, which even has a fountain in the shape of him. It is one of several “devil’s bridges” found in Europe. Its length is 56 meters, width — 3.5 meters, and its gravity-defying Central arch stands at 11.5 meters. The inner semi-circular arches was built in order to control the water level.

The reason for which some local residents are hesitant to pass through this bridge, is rooted in the dark history of this place. The Belogradchik rocks form a long plot with a width of 3 km and a length of 30 km, towering over the surrounding landscape. They formed on the seabed as the product of compression (230 million years ago, it was the sediment at the bottom of the shallow sea) and then as a result of erosion over the past 45 million years.

This massive concrete sculpture, they say, is one of the most difficult monuments on the planet.

According to Bulgarian mythology, well before the advent of man the planet was inhabited by a race of giants — Giants. These mysterious carved figures of the founders of the Bulgarian state situated in the North-East of Bulgaria.

Perched on top of Shumen since 1981, this huge monument is a reminder of the more than 1300 years of Bulgarian history. Visible from a distance of almost 30 kilometers, it rises nearly 460 feet above sea level, looming above the city of Shumen.

5. The house-monument of Buzludzha (Buzludzha Monument), the Balkan mountains

On the remote top of Buzludzha in the Bulgarian mountains stands an unusual abandoned monument.

The summit itself was a battle between the Bulgarian and Turkish troops in 1868. In 1891 there was held the founding Congress of the Bulgarian social democratic party under the leadership of Dimitar Blagoev (Dimitar Blagoev), included in the history of the country as Muslimanski Congress.

In honor of these events, the government decided to erect a monument, whose construction began in 1974. During the reign of the Communist party of Bulgaria (1944-1989) the Buzludzha monument was considered sacred by the Bulgarian Communists.

After the fall of the Communist regime in 1989 the place fell into ruin, and was completely looted. However, history buffs every year is celebrated on Buzludja anniversary of the battle of 1868.

4. Broadcasting station Kaliakra (Kaliakra Transmitter), Balgarevo (Balgarevo)

In prehistoric times, the cave Prohodna was habitable, but was it a place of permanent residence or the holding of ritual ceremonies, remains unknown. Currently, the cave Prohodna is a popular place among fans of bungee jumping.

2. “The wild man”, the Balkan mountains

He has arms, legs and head, and no one knows why this tree grew this way. You wouldn’t want to bump into him in the dark — that’s for sure.

This unique tree looks like a human figure with a height of 20 meters: it has “legs,” “arms” “torso” and “head.” The tree really looks very strange, scary and unreal, but it really can be seen deep in the woods in the heart of the Balkan mountains in Bulgaria.

Snail-house in Simeonovo, one of the neighborhoods of Sofia, is one of the local attractions. It is a colorful 5-storey building in the shape of a snail. Despite its unusual shape, the building blends with nearby structures, producing the illusion of giant snails, crawling along the alley.
