Unprecedented for the DPRK event.
North Korea is famous for many things, but still in the mass consciousness of this country had nothing to do with alcoholic feasts. However, on Friday, August 12, the capital city of Pyongyang took the first in the history of the country beer festival, which attracted about 800 guests.
As reported by Chinese CCTV channel+, the feast will last for 20 days. The festival was arranged to promote the local brand of beer — “daedong”, which is so called in honour of one of the most famous landmarks of North Korea — the same river.
North Korea held the first beer festival and it was even fun
During the opening ceremony, which began at seven o’clock, about 500 guests enjoyed the local light beer varieties of lager, eating fried fire chicken.
Cho Yong Nam, head of the General Bureau of service of the population, in his welcoming speech said: “the beer festival “daedong”, which is held on the beautiful and enchanting banks of the Taedong river, is a significant event which shows the superiority and vitality of our unique socialist system, completely focused on people.”
In a 2008 article in the New York Times beer “daedong” was described as “full bodied, slightly sweet lager with a slight bitter aftertaste.” Now this beer can be enjoyed in North Korea or in China, where it is imported in limited quantities.
Beer in North Korea began to brew in 2002, when the old British brewery was dismantled and brought to Pyongyang.
