In Tajikistan will build the highest dam in the world

The Tajik authorities and the Italian company Salini Impregilo S. p.A signed in Dushanbe the contract on construction of the dam Rogun hydropower station.

As of July 1, reports the AFP news Agency, the transaction amounted to 3.9 billion dollars.

In the framework of this agreement the Italian company will undertake the design work, purchase of equipment and the construction of hydroelectric dams.

The station will be commissioned for 15 years. It is expected that the dam on the Vakhsh river will be the world’s highest (335 meters). The design capacity of the hydropower plant is 3600 MW.

Construction of Rogun began in Soviet times in 1980. The first time the work was frozen in 1993 for lack of money and the mass Exodus of professionals. In 2004, the authorities in Dushanbe, in an effort to revive the project, has signed a contract with the Russian company “RUSAL”, which was broken three years later due to disagreements on technical parameters of the dam.

In 2010, Tajikistan decided to build the station yourself. Through the sale of shares to the population, the authorities managed to collect $ 140 million.

But against the implementation of the project at this time, sharply criticized the Uzbek authorities. The authorities of the neighboring Republic feared that the construction of hydropower plants may deprive them of water needed for the agricultural sector.

President Islam Karimov even repeatedly warned about the risk of armed conflicts over the struggle for water resources. In the end, the evaluation project was given by the world Bank experts requested Tajikistan. According to the report published on 1 September 2014, the Rogun project is recognized as harmless to the environment and the population of Central Asia.

Dushanbe announced an international tender for construction of HPP, which ended on June 27 with the victory of the Italian company Salini Impregilo S. p.A.
