In India illegally built shopping centre was demolished without an evacuation. In the result, at least four people were killed and rescue operation is underway. Hindustan Times reports that under blockages there can be six people.
The incident occurred on Saturday morning in Meerut (Kazan) in the North Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The four-story Mall was to be demolished in accordance with the decision of the local court.
However, as noted by RIA “Novosti”, the authorities did not take appropriate measures to ensure that the building is evacuated. The relatives of the victims have already submitted statements to the police.
The representative of the local Council Piyush Gautam denies that the authorities have not taken sufficient measures to avoid casualties. He pointed out that the demolition was originally scheduled for 03:00 and the authorities sent out a notice that by this time the building must be vacated. Gautam pointed out that the government gave an additional three hours for evacuation and started demolition only at 6 am.
