Nikolay Khomeriki talks about his new film:This story is very interesting from the point of view of drama: crew members are in a confined space and don’t know whether they will be able to survive and return home. Their heroism is to endure, not to lose heart, to continue to believe and remain human in any situation.”

Before shooting the film actor Pyotr Fyodorov, who plays captain Petrov, met with the prototype of his character, captain, “Mikhail Somov” Valentine Rodchenko, who was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union after the end of the drift and currently resides in St. Petersburg.

Fedorov says:we Have not a biopic, not a documentary, but a feature film, but it was very important to touch, to be able to come close to the professional world of his hero. The film is complicated by the fact that all the participants of those events live, and we have a responsibility to these people, the crew of the vessel “Mikhail Somov”. We’re going to disturb the area of the emotions of these people, they will come to watch the movie, knowing that it’s art, but will still survive. It is a huge responsibility. So I felt it was important to talk with Valentin Filippovich. I am so thankful that he took me in and gave me my job, gave everything I asked for. I wasn’t looking for portrait similarity, but rather the energy and courage. Any actor it’s very important to be able to get as close to your hero before you start shooting. It is very important not to make mistakes, especially when it comes to talking about people of heroic professions. It seemed to me very important to understand how to convey their attitude to the ship – because on the one hand, the might and Majesty of the great ship, and on the other, it is absolutely household situation, the daily work of a large team and, importantly, in times of peace. So it was interesting to sing the theme of heroism, and to talk about people with difficult personalities. And, of course, about women who were waiting for them. The shooting took place in Murmansk on the icebreaker Museum “Lenin”, a little in Sevastopol, there was filming vehicle interiors, some more in St. Petersburg, and a small crew flew to the Islands of Franz Joseph. The operator Fyodor Bookmark filmed on old Soviet and French optics and I think caught some of the shrillness of the Soviet cinema”.
“Movie Moments.” Test shooting of the film “Icebreaker”
So the icebreaker was similar to the vessel in the Antarctic drift, it is thoroughly decorated with fake snow. Especially for shooting was designed paraffin system to create the effect of icing – from light frost to heavy ice accumulation. A huge part of the work was, of course, and the creators of computer graphics, because a lot of the scenes were shot against a green screen installed in the bow or stern of the icebreaker. The most difficult challenge for the actors began shooting in Sevastopol, when they are under the scorching sun in the thirty-degree heat we had to pose in coats, boots and mittens.
