This meeting was a breakthrough.
In the late 1950s relations between the Soviet Union and the United States were tense, but not openly hostile. In July 1959 in the exhibition center of the Moscow Park “Sokolniki” opened the American national exhibition “Industrial production in the United States.” It was visited by the first Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee Nikita Khrushchev, and at the entrance he was met by the then Vice-President Richard Nixon.
