Hackers stole 80 million dollars from the Central Bank of Bangladesh because of the cheap routers

The investigator involved in the case about the theft of money from the accounts of the Central Bank of Bangladesh, said that the vulnerability of the regulator became cheap routers. On Friday, April 22, reports The Business Insider.

According to investigators, the computers of the Central Bank, connected to international payment system SWIFT, worked with devices worth about $ 10. In addition, the regulator did not use a firewall (firewall — a system of filtering Internet content and monitoring).

It is also reported that low-quality instrument of the Central Bank impedes the progress of the investigation. Better quality routers might help to obtain data on the location of the criminals and their concrete actions.

However, the Central Bank of Bangladesh does not consider itself as the sole culprit of the incident. The regulator noted that the representatives of the SWIFT pointed out the shortcomings in the protection of servers after a hacker attack.

On 15 March, the head of the Central Bank of Bangladesh Atiur Rahman left his post due to a hacker attack. It was noted that after the incident, Rahman had not informed the government about the missing money. Minister of Finance Abul Maal Abdul muheet said that he learned about the attack from the Newspapers a month after the theft.

About the disappearance of $ 100 million, the regulator announced on 9 March. Close to the Bangladesh Bank sources reported that the stolen money was transferred to the Philippines and Sri Lanka. The Central Bank found that the cash came at least three Philippine casino.
