“12 angry men” Director Sidney Lumet (1957)Debut picture Lumet received recognition from – at the moment it is considered one of the greatest films of all time. 3.5 hour film about the life of British intelligence officer was awarded seven Academy awards, including for best film, and forever entered the Golden Fund of cinema: not to count how many Directors put in their work references to this legendary picture. In recognition of Nolan, he remembered “Lawrence of Arabia” while working on the blockbuster “the Dark knight: the legend”.

“2001: a Space Odyssey, directed by Stanley Kubrick (1968)a two-hour film about how the crew of space ship “S. S. discovery” goes in search of answers to eternal questions about extraterrestrial intelligence, even half a century after the release finds new fans and many filmmakers were incredibly impressed by the work of Stanley Kubrick. It is not surprising that references to the “Space Odyssey” can be found in the Nolan – sci-Fi movie “interstellar”.
The Director doesn’t deny his fascination with painting:”Space Odyssey” I saw at the age of seven years – then my dad and brother came to the cinema “Odeon” to see the picture on the big screen, because at the time it was released into the re-rental due to the phenomenal success of “Star wars”. After I became a real fan of Kubrick, and begged all your friends to watch a movie – we did not understand, but constantly argued about his idea. This tape has incredible emotional impact on the viewer of any age – that’s what I call “pure cinema.”

“On the secret service of Her Majesty”, directed by Peter R. hunt (1969)Christopher Nolan has repeatedly admitted that he loves movies about James bond. His favorites – “On the secret service of Her Majesty” (romance) and “Goldfinger” (for the magnitude).
He himself commented on his choice:James bond, performed by George Lazenby, it seems, did not like anyone. But it seems to me that suddenly this inexpressiveness of a key character played more as a plus not as a minus. We saw James bond in its purest form – excellent level of operator skill, quality installation, fabulous music, excellently crafted scenes! This is the most romantic bond movie. And I think the most tragic”.

“Chinatown,” Director Roman Polanski (1974)the Film won the “Oscar” in 1975, tells the story of a private detective Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson), which once in their hands takes orders from a mysterious rich beauties. She instructs Jake to investigate the circumstances of a secret affair her husband, an engineer, but itotalsize in this case, Gittes turns out to be the midst of chaos, scandals and corruption.

“Star wars: Episode 4 – a New hope, Director George Lucas (1977)First released movies of the Saga “Star wars” at the time, made an indelible impression on viewers, especially on children. Nolan himself admits that Episode 4 is at its heart a special place.
The Director says:I still think this movie is just awesome. In the cinema I saw it twelve times – then, in 1978, we celebrated birthdays in theaters, so each of my friends drove our company to a “Star wars”. The film is so involving that you just dissolve in his reality for a few hours.”

“Blade runner”, Director Ridley Scott’s 1982 Blade Runner, the film adaptation of the novel with a long name “do androids Dream elektroauto?”, was recognized as the best science fiction movie ever (according to a survey of sixty scientists, conducted by the British newspaper The Guardian). Neo-Noir Thriller-dystopia raises quite a controversial ethical issue of artificially created humans, which was subsequently addressed many of the writers and Directors. In 2002 the Director in an interview with Entertainment Weekly said it must have been to say that you have inspired Nicholas ray or Kurosawa, but for someone my age that would be a lie. “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence” directed by Nagisa Oshima (1983)the Japanese Film Director tells the story of prisoners of war, languishing in the camp on the island of Java. Once at the camp is a mysterious Briton Jack sellers, who does not want to obey the rules this terrible place, which makes him an enemy of the young commander, honoring the samurai code of honor. The main role in the film was played by David Bowie: the actor’s magnetism musician at the time so captivated Nolan, having begun work on the Prestige, the Director could not present another candidate for the role of Nikola Tesla. Bowie himself rejected the offer several times, but Nolan never gave up and got his project living legend.

“The hitcher, Director Robert Harmon (1986)After the “Hitchhiker” story about a strange stranger, traveling by hitchhiking, formed the basis for several movies – and this despite the fact that the American audience the picture was taken cool.
Nolan says:Here, interestingly enough – most of the films that I liked, failed in his time in the box office. When I was a teenager, I didn’t go into the logic of events, this Thriller of the 1980s, but he was my pet, unless you count paintings of fantastic worlds like “Alien” or “Space Odyssey”. Now it seems to me that the “companion” appeared after the writer saw a hallucinogenic dream. However, I believe that Rutger Hauer played it one of his best roles.”

“Thin red line” Director Terrence Malick (1998)Before proceeding to the filming of the picture, the reclusive Terrence Malick took a break of twenty years. The plot revolves around a war drama – battle for the island of Guadalcanal during the Second world war. A small group of soldiers is forced to fight for their own survival, and for these young people it does not matter what they are fighting for.
Nolan himself has described his impressions of the film:”the Thin red line” is the story of the movies is exceptional despite the fact that it has a literary basis. This work could be a radio play or performance. In the film there is a special hypnotism that create emotion through visual and audio means. It’s a really great picture”.
