Expensive works of art that “accidentally” messed up. Photo

Дорогостоящие произведения искусства, которые «случайно» испортили. ФотоNegligence killed these masterpieces.

“Do not touch the artwork” is a simple rule, which was adopted in almost every gallery and Museum in the world. However, for some reason, there are some people who prefer to ignore this rule: some out of curiosity, others out of a desire to shoot a “cool” selfie. Whatever the motives, in the end, suffer the most priceless works of art.

1. Statue of king Sebastian

24-year-old guest of the Portuguese capital of Lisbon on may 3, climbed the 125-year-old statue that was installed on the facade of Rossio station to take a selfie. The statue, which portrayed the “king-child” Sebastian, who ruled Portugal in the 16th century, fell to the ground and crashed. Tourist who tried to escape, was caught by police and will eventually be brought to justice. Plans for the restoration of the statue are still unknown.

2. Statue Of Hercules

Hercules could have the power of gods, but, unfortunately, this property is not transferred to the sculpture, which was erected in his honor. A year ago, two tourists during a visit to the Palace Loggia Dei Militi in Cremona (Italy) has damaged the 300-year-old Statua dei due Ercole (Hercules statue two), when climbed on it to take a selfie. The tourists managed to break off a piece of the crown from one of the two marble figures, after which they were charged with vandalism.

3. Qing dynasty vases

The number one rule for visiting any place where there are priceless works of art: always have to tie the laces. In February 2006, Nick Flynn climbed the stairs inside the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge English, when suddenly stepped on his loose shoelace and lost his balance. Involuntarily flailing his arms and trying to grab something (a railing on the stairs was not), he caught three Qing dynasty vases 1600 – 1700s.

Flynn remained unharmed, but a vase worth about £ 500 000 shattered into small pieces. Flynn, who is banned for life from the Museum entrance, called the incident a routine accident. In the end, the vase was able in August 2006 113 to glue the parts into which they crashed.

4. Behold the man

Perhaps the most famous and funny attempt to “restore” the subject of art in history was an attempt to 80-year-old parishioner Cecilia giménez to restore a fresco of the beginning of XX century in the Evangelical story of “Ecce Homo” (“Behold the man”), which was in the sanctuary of Mercy Church in the Spanish town of Borja. Eventually her work was recognized as the worst restoration in history and became famous all over the Internet under the name “Fluffy Jesus”.

This is not surprising, because the image on the mural was not similar to the original, and some fluffy monkey. Although the Church initially planned to hire professional art conservators to fix the mural, by 2014, they changed their minds. Work Jimenez has become a major tourist attraction, bringing 150,000 visitors from all over the world come to Borja to $ 1,25 to look at the unusual mural.

5. The Statue Of The Virgin Mary

In 2013, an American tourist from Missouri visited with a guided tour of the Museum of the Opera del Duomo in Florence, Italy. There he approached the 600-year-old statue of the virgin Mary of the work of Giovanni d ‘ Ambrogio and for some reason tried to compare her pinky with his own. In the end, the finger of the sculpture broke off, but luckily he turned out to be gypsum.
