Nervous better not to look.
That not only lurks in the depths of the sea! The fishermen going to sea for the catch, since ancient times were superstitious, after all, being alone with the elements, begin to seriously fear for his life. A lot of will, and tradition was accompanied by fishermen for centuries. However, in our time, when many of the prejudices and stereotypes of the past have sunk into Oblivion, saltwater fishing acquires new features. For example, in the state of Rhode island is part of the New England region for the second year together with representatives of the community of marine biologists East coast championship on catching monster sharks. This is a great example of how competition helps research and philanthropy.
In this article we present the story of photographer Maggie Shannon, who visited the championship on catching monster sharks.
“The last two years in the summer I came to the city of Newport, Rhode island, watching as hundreds of fishermen from the East coast to participate in the championship on catching monster sharks. The championship moved to Newport in 2014, before that it was held in the town of Oak bluffs, to be exact — on the island of Martha’s vineyard, six miles from Cape cod in Southeast Massachusetts.
As a child growing up on this island, I’m always looking forward to the start of the season, but 2 years ago the city Council decided that the local population don’t need this “circus”, and the atmosphere of drunken celebrations is unacceptable for the neighborhood.
The first two days of the fishermen, forming a team, go to sea before dawn and return in the afternoon to allow judges to weigh their catch. While the rest of the boats patiently awaiting their turn, the organizers of the championship and tie the rope to the tail of each shark and hoisted her onto the platform for weighing. The audience in the end are only the largest fish.
In the championship on catching monster sharks, the rules of the International Association of game fishing introduced with the aim to promote ethical practice in relation to fishing. Strict fishing rules are designed to ensure minimal influence of the event on the population size of sharks. In the championship there are also scientists and researchers: they gather the necessary samples. Captains of boats, in turn, can choose what to do with a catch: to keep, to donate to the local food Bank or giving to the needs of science. The tournament provides invaluable samples for biologists from around the Eastern seaboard.
The event, of course, it may seem to many quite bloody, but it’s hard to see in the championship outright brutal massacre. How a marine biologist slit the shark’s belly, looks pretty mercilessly, but yet something is terribly beautiful to see these creatures so close and to see not only their strength but also their weakness.
My memories of the protesters on the island of Martha’s vineyard, thrown at the organizers of the championship from now on I will tell about the event impartially, but, on the other hand, my nostalgia, and reverence for the beauty of the sea giants bothering me look”.
