Queen Victoria considered the progenitor of the wedding fashion.
The vast majority of people know Queen Victoria as the ancestor of the ruling today in the UK the House of Windsor. But many are not even aware that it can rightly be considered the progenitor of wedding fashion. In addition, many of the European wedding traditions (and Russian, too) originate from one of the biggest weddings of the 19th century – Queen Victoria of great Britain and Prince albert.
Queen Victoria for her wedding to Prince albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha on 10 February 1840 wore a white dress that was an unusual choice at the time, because most of the girls preferred red and black dresses of heavy silk or satin. What Queen Victoria is credited with beginning the tradition of white wedding dresses, although in fact she was the first crowned monarch, who married “white”.
Victorian cream satin dress was made from fabric woven in Spitalfields, East London, as lace for it has been specially made by hand in Devon (and to create a piece of lace the size of 137х76 cm, over hundreds of lace makers worked for as much as six months). Also, instead of the traditional crown on the bride’s head is adorned with a wreath and veil, thrown like a veil.
Queen Victoria described her choice of clothing in her diary: “I was dressed in a white satin dress with lace, imitating the old model. Jewelry was minimal: my Turkish diamond necklace and earrings, beautiful sapphire brooch, which I gave to my dear albert.”
This dress was worn for the christening of all subsequent Royal babies until the baptism of James, Viscount Severn, in 2008, when it was first used replica.
Victoria also wore my Bridal lace christening all of their nine children and during the weddings of his two children, the eldest daughter Victoria in 1858 and is the youngest son of Leopold in 1882. And her youngest daughter, Princess Beatrice, was allowed to wear a mother dress for my own wedding in 1885.
When Victoria died, she was buried with her wedding veil on her face. Now her dress as the relic has been kept at Kensington Palace.
