Scientists from the U.S. and Australia, has developed the world’s first vaccine that protects against dementia (senile dementia, Alzheimer’s disease).
The developers claim that the vaccine will help to prevent the development of disease and even cure patients with early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.
This is the first development of its kind. The vaccine acts on Tau protein and accumulation of beta-amyloid accumulating in the brain of patients with Alzheimer’s disease and supposedly influencing the development of the disease.
After the introduction of the vaccine, the immune system produces antibodies against these proteins that leads to their destruction.
The vaccine may be used for the prevention of dementia, says Nikolai Petrovsky from Flinders University.
Researchers believe that the effectiveness of the vaccine stems from the fact that it operates on beta-amyloid and Tau-protein.
A vaccine for dementia have already been tested on cell cultures and mice. It is assumed that testing the vaccine on humans will start within the next two to three years. To ensure that it will be successful, but the developers hope that it will also be effective in the future will be used in clinical practice.
