Breastfeeding reduces the risk of postpartum depression

Грудное вскармливание уменьшает риск послеродовой депрессииWelfare mental health for women after childbirth is a serious problem.

Breastfeeding can significantly reduce the risk of postpartum depression, showed a large-scale study with the participation of 14 thousand young mothers, as reported online edition for girls and women from 14 to 35 years.

The researchers studied the cases of birth 13998 children in the South West of England. It turned out that women who planned to breastfeed and do it after delivery had risk of postpartum depression by 50% lower compared to those who refused to breast feed. However, women who wanted to breastfeed, but had no milk, was exposed to twice the risk of developing postpartum depression compared to those who are not going to switch to breastfeeding.

The researchers noted that the welfare of mental health for women after childbirth is a serious problem. The benefits of breastfeeding for the health of the child proved long ago, the world health organization recommends that during the first six months feed the child only breast milk. However, the impact of breastfeeding on the mother was not previously clearly established.

Researchers believe that the study results should provide an additional incentive for women who want to breastfeed the child, in favor of breastfeeding. Young mothers need to understand that not only the health of the child depends on the type of feeding, but also mental health themselves.
