May 16, 1966 of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee issued a Directive, which sharply criticized the political opponents of Mao Zedong in the party, the press, science and culture.

The main reasons for the campaign, according to historians, was the desire of Chairman Mao to deal with political opponents.

Mao called on the youth of the country to defend “the spirit of the Chinese revolution”, to get rid of the “old culture”. This has led to rampant youth gangs of the red guards, violence and chaos in the country.

The result of more than a million people were killed and millions more arrested.

In 1981, the CCP officially proclaimed the “cultural revolution” a catastrophic mistake.
