Armenia ratified the agreement on a unified Russian air defense system

The national Assembly of Armenia ratified the agreement on creation of joint Armenian-Russian air defense system.

For the ratification of the agreement voted 102 deputies, against – eight. The contract will be valid for five years with automatic prolongation for the same term, if one of the parties decides to terminate it.

The agreement between Russia and Armenia on creation of joint regional air defense system in the Caucasus region was signed in Moscow on 23 December 2015.

It gives Armenia an opportunity to use in the interests of their defense combat Air and space forces of Russia, including satellite systems and fighter aircraft.

Opponents of the joint protection system fear that with the entry of the agreement into force, Armenia will lose control of their defense forces.

Some MPs believe that Russia can transmit military secrets to the Azerbaijan, with which Armenia has a very tense relationship because of the conflict around Nagorno-Karabakh.

“This is an attempt to transfer the remains of the sovereignty of Armenia to a foreign country that sold weapons to Azerbaijan by $ 5 billion,” – commented the decision natssobraniya opposition party “Heritage”.
