António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres was born in Lisbon in 1949, studied engineering and physics at Higher technical Institute.

After finishing high school in 1971, he began an academic career as senior lecturer.

In 1974, a zealous Catholic Guterres joined the Socialist party and soon decided to devote himself entirely to politics.

In 1995, three years after his election as General Secretary of the socialists, antónio Guterres became Prime Minister of Portugal.

At the head of the government he remained seven years, until 2002.

In 2005, Guterres, fluent in Portuguese, Spanish, English and French, took up the post of the UN high Commissioner for refugees.

According to the BBC, over the years of his leadership the number of officials in the headquarters in Geneva has decreased, the Agency’s ability to react to international crises, sending its employees to the “hot spots”, according to experts, improved.
