About 1000 years ago, before the Islands ‘ permanent settlements historically completely absent from mammals. The exceptions were two species of bats found in the coastal waters of whales, sea lions and seals.
Simultaneously with the advent of the land the first permanent inhabitants, the Polynesians, the Islands appeared small rats and dogs. Later the first European settlers brought pigs, cows, goats, mice and cats. The development of European settlements in the nineteenth century led to the emergence in New Zealand of new species.
The appearance of some of them were very negative impact on the flora and fauna of the Islands. Such animals include rats, cats, ferrets, rabbits (imported into the country for the development of hunting), and weasels (brought into the country to control the population of rabbits).
