A new alignment of political forces in Spain

Новый расклад политических сил в Испании

The two-party system in Spain ceased to exist in December 2015, when neither national nor Spanish socialist workers ‘ party failed to gain parliamentary elections enough votes to independently form a government, as has happened for decades. Although formally the conservatives won a victory, the advantage was not so significant that their leader, Mariano Rajoy decided to head the Cabinet of Ministers without the support of MPs of other parties. In connection with these he declined the offer of the king of Spain Philip VI. Then the “ball” has moved to the socialist Pedro Sanchez, but his candidacy did not satisfy the parliamentarians.

After long negotiations, so anything and did not end, Philip VI took the decision to hold the 26 June re-election. And then the Kingdom can wait for a new shock.

According to the newspaper La Razon, the newly formed coalition of left forces “Unidos podemos” (the Union of the parties Podemos and United left) and PSOE could bypass and take the second place by results of voting. According to public opinion polls, it is ready to vote for 24.9 per cent of potential voters that will give her the opportunity to take from 76 to 81 seats in Parliament. In favor of the socialists spoke 21 percent of respondents, so that they can get from 80 to 84 mandates. The people’s party still in the lead with 30.2 percent of the vote (125 to 130 seats). Centrist party of “the people” gets 14.7 per cent (39-41). Other political forces on the formation of the government to influence in any way can not.

The situation with the “Unidos podemos” is a rare phenomenon in politics. Usually after an Alliance of different parties appears quite a large number of disgruntled Association, and the level of support for a new force is less than the sum of its parts. This time it’s different. Joint statement of left-wing forces allows them to get more seats than if they went to the polls separately. The results of a new vote they can get in the Parliament by 5-10 seats more than able to win in December (69 “Podemos” and 2 from “United left”).

By the way, in these days of “Podemos” is celebrating one of their birthdays. Formally the party was established in January 2014, but based on the may 15 Movement (“indignados”, “angry”). Five years ago, in may 2011, thousands of Spaniards took to the streets to Express their dissatisfaction with anti-social policies of the government. In the Central square of Madrid, Puerta del Sol and other cities have formed spontaneous camps, which lasted several weeks. Similar performances were repeated several times, until finally in the political arena appeared several parties, including Podemos.
