The monastery has an interesting history.
Today we would like to tell you about the Saviour-Stone monastery, the jewel of Russian architecture. Founded in 1260 on a tiny island in the Kubensky the island, it is one of the oldest monasteries of the Russian North.
The monastery has its own complicated history, it was erected by Prince Gleb Vasilkovich in memory of the miraculous salvation in the storm. The surging waves tried to engulf the vessel of the Prince and his boyars, but at the last moment on the horizon the rocky shore of the island. When the Prince with the wards came down, he was surprised by the fact that on a tiny island huddled people. Here lived the desert, believers hermits who devoted his life to preaching the Christian faith. To build a convent for them was a daunting task, and the Prince Gleb Vasilkovich undertook the construction of the monastery.
The base wood of the monastery is dated to 1260, the construction of a stone building – 1481. It was the first stone building of the architects of the Russian North. Over the years of its existence, the Cathedral has suffered years of prosperity and oblivion. Its walls repeatedly suffered from fires, in the years of Soviet power in the premises tried to organize colony for minors, dismantled the walls of bricks and even tried to blow up. Years later, the building of the Cathedral was turned into the fresh fish, because its production was carried out in the lake on an industrial scale.
Today the Saviour-Stone monastery revives and functions again. Basically the restoration done by volunteers who are trying to achieve public support for their initiatives. Savior-Stone monastery now, here are beginning to come not only believers but also tourists who have chosen the scenic area.
